Yelawolf revealed details about his music journey including getting dropped from Columbia Records before his debut album was released. The label, led by Rick Rubin at the time, dropped several artists, but Yelawolf remains unsure of the motivations behind his release. He returned to Gadsden, broke, but managed to make the cover of Ozone magazine and produced the mixtape "The Ballad of Slick Ricky Bobby." His eventual break came from collaborations with DJ Ideal to create "Stereo," a tribute to classic rock, and the creation of award-nominated work which led to him becoming an artist with Interscope and Shady Records. Yelawolf later admitted to building a reputation as the go-to artist for rock hooks, featuring in tracks with Slim Thug, Juelz Santana, and Big Boi before insisting he got the opportunity to rap, leading to a shift in perceptions of his talent.
