Tala Mahmood was born in Lucknow but started his career in Calcutta under a stage name called Tapan Kumar. Talat Mahmood has many bangla songs to his credit while he was known as Tapan Kumar. Once Talat Mahmood came to Bombay, he sang and acted in many films, eventually becoming a singing actor in the film industry just like his idol KL Saigal. Tala Mahmood had a velvet voice which was apt for singing soft romantic songs and ghazals that was popular in Bollywood during the 1950's. Talat Mahmood was given Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1992.
