Why is Kylo Ren’s lightsaber different? After proving he was committed to the dark side and becoming the leader of the Knights of Ren, Kylo bled his lightsaber crystal. Injecting his hatred for his family into the kyber, his anger was so intense that he not only physically damaged his hand but he also cracked the crystal.

Placing the crystal back into his lightsaber hilt, the energy was no longer able to channel through the crystal properly. As a result, the blade became unstable, and he had to install vents on the sides to keep the weapon from exploding in his hands.
