Dr. Larry Baucom teaches the fourth edition of our gripping series, “Tangled” encouraging us to live into what Jesus says we are.

Inspired by Matthew 5:13-16, Pastor Larry unfolds the teaching in 3 thoughtful points.

Point 1: The primary purpose of salt and light is influence.

Pastor points out that Jesus does not ask his disciples if they would consider being salt and light as if it were a choice, rather, he states as a matter of fact. Given this, how much will we live into what we are? Dr. Baucom teaches that just as the primary purpose of salt and light is to influence our purpose is to be an influence that protects against corruption, preserves what is good, and lights up the darkness.

Point 2: For our influence to change the world we cannot live in isolation.

Salt influences the flavor of food and light illuminates dark places influencing many things that would be hindered in the dark. Pastor tells us that it only takes a little salt to change the flavor and the light of a supernova is hardly what is needed to light up a dark room, therefore, we should not strive to be “stars”, but “candles”. Those who seek stardom struggle to stay humble and pliable in the hands of God. Like the street lights long ago tended by lamplighters, our call is to keep the lights burning, passing on the light we receive to others.

Point 3: As my life reflects light into darkness the world is changed.

In verse 16 Jesus says, “Let your light so shine that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Dr. Baucom tells us that if we suffer from “star syndrome” then our effectiveness in the world will be limited by arrogance, but our small deeds collectively change the world and build community between us. Salty, shiny Christ-followers working together to love others pass on the love of God to a world in need.
