Russia And China Announce Plan To Build A Nuclear Power Plant On The Moon!

Orbital space stations, research base camps, mining operations, and other ambitious plans seem to be in the works for every major space agency about the Moon. All of this activity will require a substantial power supply.

Solar power is one alternative, but it is at best inconsistent due to the Moon's two-week "nights," and the wind is obviously nonexistent in the Moon's almost nonexistent atmosphere. And so, according to China and Russia, nuclear power is perfect. How are they going to make it happen let’s find out in today’s episode.

Hey folks! Welcome back to Elon Musk Evolution, where we bring you the most recent news about Elon Musk and his multibillion-dollar companies, space news, and the latest science and technology.

So nuclear power, which has become more and more small over the years, appears like the obvious answer because it can produce enormous amounts of power in a small compact. Furthermore, it appears that the Chinese National Space Administration (CNSA) and the Russian space agency Roscosmos both agree. The Russian state-run news outlet TASS revealed last week that China and Russia are "considering" working together to build a nuclear reactor on the moon. The concept was revealed by Yury Borisov, CEO of Roscosmos, at the World Youth Festival in Sirius, Russia.

According to Borisov's statement in the TASS report, "Today, we are seriously considering a project to deliver to the Moon and mount a power reactor there jointly with our Chinese partners somewhere between 2033 and 2035." Likewise, Borisov said that they have the technology to completely automate such a reactor, negating the need for constant human presence at the station.

This reactor will be a part of the joint effort between China and Russia, along with a few other nations, on the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), which will function as a lunar science station. Like NASA's own Artemis missions, the ILRS was first announced back in 2021 and is expected to be established in the 2030s, with preparatory missions continuing throughout the 2020s.

Obviously, nuclear energy has long been considered the preferred lunar energy source—Russia and China are hardly the only ones. NASA successfully launched the SNAP-10A, the first nuclear reactor in orbit, back in 1965. More recently, the agency launched the Kilopower project in 2015, with the goal of developing nuclear-powered technology for spacetravel and maybe lunar operations. NASA declared the mission to be accomplished three years later. Currently, the fission surface power project is being worked on. Its goal is to develop a system that will weigh less than six metric tons and be able to produce forty kilowatts of power, which NASA believes will be sufficient to support thirty-three houses for ten years.
NASA declared the project's first phase finished in late January 2024. Phase 2 will start in 2025, with the goal of developing a final reactor design for testing on the Moon.

According to a press release from NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate, Trudy Kortes, the program director for Technology Demonstration Missions, "a demonstration of a nuclear power source on the Moon is required to show that it is a safe, clean, reliable option."
