After many delays, Boeing's Starliner is set to launch its first crewed mission to the International Space Station on May 6th. This mission, known as Crew Flight Test-1, is a crucial step for Boeing and for the future of commercial spaceflight.
As the launch approaches, the Starliner team is busy with final preparations to ensure the mission's success. This includes extensive testing to meet NASA's safety standards, quarantine protocols for the crew, and final system checks.
The launch involves multiple stages of the Atlas 5 rocket. Shortly after liftoff, the rocket’s boosters will fire to propel the spacecraft upward, followed by the separation of the main rocket about two and a half minutes into the flight. The second stage, the Centaur, will then take over to continue the ascent into orbit. Approximately 12 minutes into the flight, the Centaur will release the Starliner, setting it on its path toward the International Space Station.
Upon reaching the International Space Station, Starliner will dock at the Harmony module. This is a critical phase that requires precise execution to ensure a safe connection to the space station.
While docked, the crew will conduct experiments and tests to validate the spacecraft’s systems in space. Despite extensive planning, the mission carries risks. Issues such as fuel leaks, system malfunctions, or problems during re-entry are potential concerns that have been addressed through testing.
After about a week at the International Space Station, Starliner will begin its journey back to Earth. This phase involves re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere and deploying parachutes for a water landing in the Pacific Ocean. The performance of the heat shield and parachute system during re-entry is crucial for the safety of the crew and spacecraft.
Assuming a successful mission, Boeing plans to begin operational missions to the International Space Station. This success is pivotal for Boeing as it aims to establish Starliner as a reliable and cost-effective solution for crewed space travel, competing with SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, which has already started operational missions.
