I proceed to seal the log house. I will do the sealing using a traditional method that has been used for centuries in our area, namely rye straw.
I cut the straw myself with a scythe in July. I did this a month before the harvest so that the straw grasses would be flexible, soft and so that they would not break when twisted.
From a piece of farm machinery I found on the habitat, I make a tool to ram the straw into the gap between the bales (the arbor). I cut the straw into 35 centimetre sections. To make sure the straw seals the house solidly and holds firmly in the wooden wall, I first widen the gap between the logs with a jack. Traditionally, this was done by driving wooden wedges between the logs.
This is not hard work, but unfortunately it is very monotonous. I'm doing it for the first time in my life and it took me a while to figure out the correct way to twist the straw.

In the meantime, winter comes. I will be able to test my new acquisition - a Kubota Saturn X-24 tractor. The tractor is equipped with a front loader. Unfortunately, I only have a bucket for it, which doesn't work well when trying to clear snow from the access road. Since the snow is already 30 cm and I have a problem to drive the car out of the habitat, I decide to make a simple snow plough.
I make it from leftover logs and carpentry angles. The plough can be easily fitted to a front linkage and works superbly for clearing snow.

I wish you all the best for the New Year!
