Elon Musk Reveals An AI-Piloted Fighter Jet!

Elon Musk warned at the first-ever world summit on AI safety that artificial intelligence could mean the end of humanity. The billionaire claimed that because this technology will be the first time in human history that people have faced anything more intelligent than themselves, there is an "existential risk" to humanity. And recently, the US Air Force just conducted an exercise that might have proven this. Let’s find out in today’s episode!

The United States Air Force Test Pilot School (USAF TPS) at Edwards Air Force Base (Edwards AFB) in California, US, uses the Variable In-flight Simulation Test Aircraft (VISTA) X-62A, formerly known as NF-16D, a unique training aircraft built by Lockheed Martin Skunk Works and Calspan.

The aircraft will be essential in advancing the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and tactical autonomous capabilities for the United States Air Force.

April 1992 saw the maiden flight of the VISTA aircraft, a key component of the TPS curriculum. To overcome its shortcomings and strengthen the USAF's capacity to test a variety of extreme configurations quickly and safely, it underwent a number of improvements and alterations throughout time.

The upgraded aircraft was formally renamed from NF-16D VISTA to VISTA X-62A in June 2021 and was recognized by the USAF as a national asset. Because of the aircraft, USAF TPS is the only test pilot school with an operational X-plane to support its curriculum.

This was the first instance of AI being utilized to operate a combat aircraft, with the VISTA being flown by an AI-driven autonomy agent for over seventeen hours. A combined team from the US Department of Defense (DoD) carried out 12 flight tests at Edwards AFB in December 2022 to hone advanced fighter maneuvers. This test flight was one of them.

Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the US Air Force Test Center, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) were among the organizations that provided support for the flying testing.

During the exercises, the VISTA X-62A was piloted by AI-driven autonomy agents from DARPA's Air Combat Evolution (ACE) and AFRL's Autonomous Air Combat Operations (AACO). While ACE's AI agents conducted dogfighting exercises against helpful AI red-team agents, AACO's AI agents engaged in one-on-one beyond-visual-range (BVR) enemy combat simulations.

The real world's airspace borders were respected while the tactical maneuvers were carried out independently.

The upgraded VISTA X-62A aircraft measures 48 feet 7 inches (14.8 meters) in length, 15 feet 9 inches (4.8 meters) in height, and 32 feet 2 inches (9.8 meters) in wingspan. At the root and tip of the wings, the aircraft uses National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 64A204 airfoils.

A pilot and a safety pilot are among the two crew members it can carry, and its maximum takeoff weight is 42,300 pounds (19,187 kg). The airplane weighs 18,238 pounds (8,273 kg) empty, and 26,463 pounds (12,003 kg) gross.

Block 40 avionics are installed aboard VISTA, a modified F-16D Block 30 Peace Marble Il aircraft. It permits digital aircraft designs to be tested in flight prior to the aircraft's construction.
