On Thursday, the Butte Civic Center board of directors met for the first time since the great elephant escape a few weeks ago.

Just before noon on April 16, a few hours before the Jordan World Circus was set to perform, Viola the Asian elephant ran away from a fenced-in outdoor storage area when a truck backfired near where she was taking a bath. Her escaper resulted in her becoming a viral sensation as she walked along Harrison Avenue and the surrounding area for about 15 minutes before trainers brought her back.

Civic Center manager Bill Melvin confirmed that no one was injured in the incident. The only damage caused was to a fence outside the Civic Center, and the circus has agreed to pay for the material costs of replacing it.
