Elon Musk Announces Starship Update Ahead of Flight Test-4!

SpaceX is gearing up for the next test flight of its Starship megarocket. Super Heavy, a 33-engine booster, specifically booster 11, is the first stage of a Starship, and SpaceX stated via X on Thursday, April 4, that it has been moved to the launch pad at its Starbase site in South Texas. In today’s episode, we are going to find out the latest update in Starbase, as it keeps on changing.

In order to get ready for Starship's fourth flight, Booster 11 has now rolled to the Orbital Launch Pad (OLP) to finish its own engine test campaign, while Ship 29 has finished its engine testing campaign.

Ship 29 executed two static fires following its rollout to finish its engine test campaign. A typical six-engine static fire was performed in the first one to confirm every engine. A single-engine burn from the header tanks constituted the second static.

Ship 29 was rolled back to the High Bay, where last-minute launch preparations occurred after its engine test campaign was finished. These will probably involve mounting the four Starlink dishes atop the nosecone, just like Ship 28, so that everyone may have almost unobstructed onboard views.

Testing and heat shield repairs will be a significant portion of the last preparations. According to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the primary objective of Flight 4 is to survive the main peak heating phase of reentry, necessitating the use of a functional and clean heat shield.

Furthermore, in light of the roll problems that Ship 28 had, Ship 29 may also require any necessary changes.

Booster 11, Ship 29's partner, has now been raised onto the Orbital Launch Mount (OLM) and rolled out in preparation for the completion of engine testing.

This is going to resemble the Booster 10 campaign a lot, where SpaceX decided to go straight for a 33-engine static burn instead of a spin prime). Once this is finished, Booster 11 will probably return to Mega Bay to make any last adjustments needed before taking off. The booster is now awaiting the preparation of the Orbital Launch Pad (OLP).

On April 5, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. CDT, there will be a single closure to finish this testing. That could be delayed by a few days, though, as everything in Starbase is subject to change.

Crews have been putting in a lot of overtime to get the OLP ready for the static fire testing of Booster 11. Teams recently replaced the two main propellant lines for the Booster Quick Disconnect and put the hood back on. After suffering significant damage during the previous flight, hopefully, these two lines will fare better.

In addition to the Booster Quick Disconnect, teams have been working on the arms and carriage of the chopstick. In order to shelter the wiring from the exhaust of the booster during its ascent, SpaceX is attempting to reroute a large portion of it and add conduit shielding. The teams had to make these adjustments since on the last launch, this exhaust burned away a significant portion of the wiring.

All of this work, together with the standard interior OLM renovations, should be finished by the end of this week, at which point the pad will be prepared for Booster 11.
