Senior Tories from the centrist wing of the party have cautioned that if the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is used to halt deportation flights to Rwanda, it should be reformed.

Damian Green and Matt Warman, the chairman and a key member of the One Nation caucus, said that the treaty should not obstruct Rishi Sunak's migration plan, which recently became law.

Although One Nation MPs have historically defended the ECHR against criticisms from within their party, they assert that the Rwanda scheme must comply with international law. Nonetheless, Green and Warman stressed that if the government were to face challenges regarding removal flights, it should be prepared to lead reforms of the court.

Previously, the most senior judge at the European Court of Human Rights, which oversees the convention, cautioned that Sunak's scheme might violate the convention.
