Pope St. John Paul II, quoting St. Thomas Aquinas, said "Love is diffusive" when speaking about the family. In marriage, we're called to have a disposition towards generosity and a going out of ourselves. In this way, we can rely on God to provide for us as he stretches us and teaches us to be less self-centered and more self-giving.

There are legitimate grave reasons to avoid pregnancy, but even couples without children are called to a type of fruitfulness, and a generosity, to others. And when a husband and wife are open to the ways God is calling them to be stretched in order to make room for others, they find fulfillment in fruitfulness and generosity.
