Most people would agree that we need to do everything in our power to prevent that grim future by reducing the negative effects of human actions. They say, "There is no planet B," and environmentalists agree.

But if you ask billionaire Elon Musk, you might get an entirely different answer. In 2021, at the launch of a SpaceX rocket into space, Musk famously declared, "We don't want to be one of those single-planet species." "We want to be a multi-planet species." Musk continued, saying that he is "highly confident" that SpaceX will successfully land humans on Mars in the not-too-distant future.

Similar to the Kryptonian scientist Jor-El, the father of DC Comics' Superman, these people believe that the only way to guarantee their species' survival in the galaxy after their planet explodes is to send their progeny away in a space pod. Indeed, Musk still seems to be captivated by stories of heroic, spacefaring heroes, just as he was as a kid.

Musk claimed in a documentary about his childhood in Pretoria, South Africa, "I read all the comics I could find, or that they let me read in the bookstore before chasing me away." Superheroes fought evil on Earth and on other worlds, and alien races battled humans in those stories.

Today's Musk, a bombastic entrepreneur who is both loved and hated around the world, likens himself to these literary characters by claiming to have the power to save the world all by himself. Because environmentalists put more faith in the group than in any one "great man," he finds himself at odds with their worldview.

Likewise it provides some insight into a central mystery involving Elon Musk. Why is someone who has contributed greatly to the green transition with their innovations in electric vehicles, solar energy, and energy storage met with such hostility by those who advocate for protecting the environment? Why do environmentalists who once supported him online now mock him at rallies? Elon Musk claims to be environmentally conscious, but how green is he, really? To find the answer, one must go through both time and space.

Musk was born in a historic year for humanity, 1971. It was the first year people lived over the planet's biocapacity, scientists at the Global Footprint Network assessed decades later. In 1970, the United States had its inaugural Earth Day, the Environmental Protection Agency was established, and the Clean Air Act was signed into law in response to mounting public concern over smog, acid rain, and water contamination.
