"My grandfather, Birendra Chattopadhyay was a humanist poet. He was deeply affected by the socio-political scenario around him and his poetry mostly expressed the pain of the oppressed. He wrote about the freedom struggle, the partition, Bengal Famine and several movements that stood against state oppression.
'Ekti Shishu Manush Ebong Ekti Shishu Payra' is a poem inspired by Pablo Picasso's painting, ‘Child with a Dove’. It was written during a period of turmoil that continued after The Emergency. 'Pakhi' or Bird is a metaphor for a loved one. At a time when the common man was punished for voicing their opinion, the poem portrays the fear of losing loved ones to the state.
Many of his poems were made into songs by several composers. This poem was recreated into a song 'Pakhi toke lukai kothay' by composer Amit Roy, my father."
