Whether you own a home or are renting an apartment, a tool kit will come in handy for quick fixes or major repairs. Here are some quick tips on what every toolbox should contain.

You’ll always need a carpenter’s hammer for anything from hanging pictures to building a bookcase. A tape measure is an absolute must. You will need it for everything from measuring windows for curtains to measure exactly where to make a cut when sawing.

A smaller finishing hammer can be used for more delicate projects like working on a picture frame or installing new weather stripping around a door.

You will also need a pair of pliers with wire cutting jaws that can be used for small gripping jobs and cutting picture wire for those pictures you want to hang. Needle nose pliers are excellent for getting into those hard to reach spaces.

A small file is very helpful for smoothing metal objects or sharpening blades. And keep a sanding block in your toolbox with different types of sandpaper for smoothing wood.

You’ll also want a variety of screwdrivers both flat head and Philip’s head, three sizes of both should handle any screw. You need a variety of screwdrivers because if you use the wrong size screwdriver you will run the risk of damaging the screw head so that it can’t be removed.

A 6 inch adjustable wrench will needed for gripping and tightening loose nuts. Also add a box set of ¼ inch drive sockets for working on some furniture and appliances.

A smallhand saw will be helpful for general use around the house.

You need to wear eye protection whenever you hammer a nail since there is always the possibility of a nail to fly out of the hole, or a piece of metal to chip from the nail or hammer head.

Remember you will carry your toolbox with you wherever you live, stock it with quality tools and it will last for years to come. You will definitely want to have a pair of safety glasses or goggles handy.

Here is a list of other tools you may want to consider when it comes time to turn you toolbox into a work shop:

Long-nose pliers
Electric drill
Chalk line
Circular saw
Chisel Hacksaw
Combination square
Utility light
Fish tape
Cable stripper
Wire stripper
Colored tape
Voltage tester
Keyhole saw
Utility knife
Right-angle drill
Pry bar and wood wedge
