The Winter Soldier’s theme was easily the first memorable villain theme in the MCU.

I know, I know, “Bucky isn’t a villain, he’s a victim”. He was the ‘antagonist’ of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and therefore I will place his theme in both the heroes and villains playlists respectively.

The Winter Soldier theme, composed by Henry Jackman for Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and re-appearing in Captain America: Civil War (2016), also composed by Jackman, is absolutely fantastic. Jackman is no stranger to badass villain themes, having composed Magneto’s iconic metal theme for X-Men: First Class (2011). Henry Jackman seems to have a profound ability to look beyond the black and white fundamentals of what a character is. He looks deeply into who a character is.

The Winter Soldier’s theme is comprised first of muffled, pained screams, desperately trying to escape something. These are likely supposed to be Bucky’s screams, buried deep beneath the Winter Soldier, trying to escape. But even more genius is the percussion. The three spaced out drum beats create a simple yet threatening atmosphere, but the fast-paced percussion is none other than the sound of train tracks. (Probably best heard in the track ‘Countdown’, not used in this suite). Absolutely brilliant on Jackman’s part. Why? How did Bucky Barnes die before he became the Winter Soldier?

The songs used in this suite are:

The Winter Soldier - Henry Jackman
The Causeway - Henry Jackman
Into The Fray - Henry Jackman
Fallen - Henry Jackman
