In the bustling port city of San Francisco, anything goes on the Barbary Coast. Into this chaotic world steps Mary Rutledge (Miriam Hopkins), a beautiful and determined woman with a mysterious past. Mary finds herself caught between the affections of two men: the ruthless gangster Louis Chamalis (Edward G. Robinson) and the honorable prospector Jim Carmichael (Joel McCrea). Will she choose love or fortune? And can she survive in a town where betrayal lurks around every corner?
