Erich Hoepner was born on the 14th of September 1886 in Frankfurt an der Oder, then part of the German Empire.
When the First World War broke out on 28 July 1914, he was deployed to the Western Front as a company commander and staff officer. Hoepner was promoted to Captain of Cavalry and by the time the war ended on 11 November 1918, he was decorated several times, including the Iron Cross First and Second Class.
Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party came into power in 1933.
