Tara Kumar is behind the decks for this month’s instalment of For The Love Of It, created in association with Pioneer DJ.

A DJ and radio presenter, Tara Kumar’s curatorial style is borderless and free-flowing, inspired by years in transit between countries and cultures. Born in Alice Springs, Australia, Kumar, who is half-Irish and half Malaysian-Indian, spent a formative part of her life in Dublin before settling in London.

A contributor on BBC Radio 1's Future Artists and Indie Show, Tara's also a monthly resident at Foundation FM, curating and presenting Kumar Klub Radar; an hour-long show rooted in diasporic discovery and era-spanning tastes. Tara owes her wayfaring spirit and affinity for obscure globalist gems to her ancestors, particularly her Grandfather and her parents who would play the likes of Joni Mitchell, ABBA and Creedance Clearwater Revival.

“My Grandfather had an amazing record collection of classic Tamil music. I loved the artwork. In terms of my Indian heritage, I loved the colourful saris. I love crate-digging and going into record stores. That’s one thing I love about London record stores; they have Bollywood compilations. I love finding some mad South Asian disco or funk or just a soundtrack I can work into the mix.”

Listen to Tara Kumar's jubilant guest mix created on our Pioneer DJ CDJ3000’s and new DJM–A9 Mixer.
