Nylon became the world’s first synthetic fiber when it was introduced on October 27, 1938. DuPont chemist Wallace Carothers created the material from chemicals found in petroleum. The material was introduced as nylon stockings. By the 1950s, nylon was in everything and made up 63% of the world’s textiles by 1965.
