When you go under anesthesia, your body goes through processes you might not be aware of. This video aims to inform you about the airway tools used during anesthesia and their possible effects on your voice, especially for those whose professions depend on their vocal quality. We cover the three main airway tools—Oral Airway, Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA), and Endotracheal Tube (ETT)—and their suitability based on the type of anesthesia and individual medical conditions like GERD, asthma, and sleep apnea.

Anesthesia suppresses your body's nervous system, often necessitating the use of airway tools to assist or control breathing. While these are crucial for patient safety, they can impact your vocal cords and potentially cause voice changes. This information is especially vital for actors, singers, public speakers, and anyone else whose voice is a critical part of their career.

The Oral Airway is the least invasive and is used in lighter levels of anesthesia where patients can still breathe independently. It doesn't directly affect the vocal cords but is not suitable for people with severe GERD, asthma, or sleep apnea.

The Laryngeal Mask Airway or LMA is a versatile tool that can be used in a wider range of anesthesia depths. It allows for controlled breathing if the patient stops breathing on their own. While it offers greater control over the airway compared to the Oral Airway, it's still not advisable for those with the conditions mentioned above.

The Endotracheal Tube or ETT is the most robust and invasive airway tool. It is inserted into the trachea and can completely seal off the airway to prevent aspiration and provide full control over breathing. The ETT is often chosen for complex surgeries and for patients with specific medical conditions. However, it has the highest chance of irritating the vocal cords, leading to potential voice changes.

For those with GERD, preemptive measures like NPO guidelines and avoiding triggering foods can optimize your condition prior to surgery. Asthma patients should bring their albuterol inhaler and use it before anesthesia induction. If you have sleep apnea, using your CPAP machine can lead to a more stable anesthetic experience.

The video also discusses how you can take proactive steps to minimize risks and complications. One simple remedy for post-operative sore throat is sucking on licorice lozenges after waking up from anesthesia.

Informed patients can better advocate for their health, especially during surgical procedures. This video aims to equip you with the knowledge to discuss anesthesia options with your healthcare provider, ask informed questions, and take actionable steps to prepare for surgery, reducing risks and improving your experience.
