Domenico Cimarosa

He was born Dec 17, 1749, in Aversa, Kingdom of Naples (now Italy).
He passed away Jan 11, 1801, in Venice, Italy.

Musical Era:

Cimarosa lived and composed during the Classical period of music, particularly in the latter half of the 1700s.

Musical Background:

Early education in music in Naples.

Influenced by the Neapolitan school of opera, and by composers Paisiello and Piccinni.

Known for his melodic creativeness and ability to blend Italian lyricism with classical form.

Music Genre:

Mostly known for his operras, which were incredibly popular during his lifetime.

Also composed chamber, sacred music, and instrumental works, though his operas were, by far, the most popular.

Famous Works:

"Il Matrimonio Segreto" (The Secret Marriage) - his most famous opera, which remains in the repertoire of opera houses around the world.

Other notable operas include:
"L'italiana in Londra" - The Italian Girl in London
"Il Mercato di Malmantile" - The Market of Malmantile
"Gli Orazi e i Curiazi" - The Horatii and the Curiatii

Legacy:

Cimarosa's operatic style influenced later composers, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Gioachino Rossini and his operas are still performed today .

We are happy to share the wonderful compositions by this gifted composer of the classical era.
