Surveys show that large percentages of American consumers would buy a Chinese-made vehicle, if they were priced at even a slight discount to other brands.

But both candidates for President, Joe Biden and Donald Trump, have promised to either enact punishing tariffs that would effectively double the price of Chinese-built cars, or ban them outright. They are joined by key Senators from both parties calling for high tariffs or import bans.

This is not too surprising for certain officeholders from the Upper Midwest, or from districts with automobile or parts manufacturing, especially those facing tough elections in November. It's less obvious why representatives holding safe seats, and particularly those who have no carmakers but millions of car buyers, would similarly call for policies that keep new cars priced out of reach for most people.
