When the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies begin to help those affected, emergency needs assessments are fundamental in understanding the impact of a crisis and its humanitarian consequences. This video presents the Emergency Needs Assessments approach and process that IFRC has developed as part of its surge optimization process (Video Link:    • Surge Optimisation  , aiming to inform Emergency Plan of Action with strong, timely & reliable evidences on assessed needs and capacities, especially in case of major scale disasters.

This video was produced by the Surge Optimization Reference Group #3 on Emergency Needs Assessments and Planning, thanks to the support of the Australian Red Cross who is leading it. One key area of focus of this reference group is building capacity on the revised approach of Emergency Needs Assessments within the IFRC and the Network of National Societies. This video could be used to introduce the approach and as introduction to the “Leading Emergency Assessments and Planning (LEAP)" training, that is aiming to strengthen skills, competencies and capacities within IFRC and its National Societies network.
