📚 Chapter One: School in England 🏫

On a cold winter day, a little girl named Sara Crewe and her father arrived in London. Sara, with her long black hair and green eyes, sat quietly in the cab, gazing at the tall houses and the dark sky. Her father, noticing her silence, asked, "What are you thinking about, Sara?"

"I'm thinking about our house in India," Sara replied. "And the hot sun and the blue sky. I don’t think I like England very much, Father."

Her father explained that she must go to school in London while he went back to India for work. Sara, wanting to be with her father, pleaded, "Please come to school with me! I can help you with your lessons."

Though touched, her father smiled sadly. He loved Sara dearly, as she was his only child, and they were very good friends. Arriving at Miss Minchin’s School for Girls, they were greeted by the tall, black-dressed Miss Minchin, who complimented Sara's beauty.

Confused, Sara wondered why Miss Minchin thought she was beautiful when she didn't see herself that way. Sara wasn't beautiful, but her father was rich, which Miss Minchin valued.

During his week in London, Mr. Crewe showered Sara with beautiful dresses, books, flowers, and a big doll. Miss Minchin, while smiling, thought it was excessive for a seven-year-old. When Mr. Crewe left, both he and Sara were sad, but Sara resolved to be happy for her father's sake.

In her room, Sara confided in her new doll, "Father wants me to be happy. I love him very much and I want to be a good daughter, so I must be happy."

Despite initial challenges, Sara soon made friends at the school. Some girls were not very nice, believing their wealth made them important.
