There are growing calls for Victoria to implement annual medical assessments for drivers over the age of 75 to keep their licenses.

The Age reports drivers over 65 are responsible for more than 140 deaths and 7,000 injuries on the state’s roads over the last five years.

The RACGP believes it is not a matter of discrimination but a recognition that certain skills required to drive safely can deteriorate with age.

Police data shows 20 per cent of the state’s motorists are now aged over 65.

This is up from 16 per cent in 2014.
