Top Gun is a 1986 American action drama film. Tom Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young naval pilot aboard the USS Enterprise. He and his radar intercept officer, Lieutenant Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), were given the opportunity to train at the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun) at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, California. Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer and Tom Skerritt also star in supporting roles.

Top Gun was released on May 16, 1986. Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews from critics, but its visual effects and soundtrack were generally well received. Four weeks after release, theatrical releases were up 45%. Despite initially mixed reviews, the film was a huge commercial success, grossing $357 million at the global box office against a production budget of $15 million. "Top Gun" was the highest-grossing domestic film of 1986.
