The International Committee of the Red Cross was founded on this day in 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland, inspired by the work of Henri Dunant. Dunant also helped write the international charter for the YMCA, inspired the first Geneva Convention, which provides international law regarding warfare and the treatment of prisoners of war, and was co-winner of the very first Nobel Peace Prize.

As a young man, Henri Dunant won the piety prize in school, followed the preaching of key leaders in the 'Church of the Awakening,' a charity-focused group, and formed a weekly Bible study of young men with the goal of --- quote – “heating up the lukewarm.”

When he saw the horrors of an Italian battlefield, his Bible-centered faith led him to respond with compassion and vision and literally reform the rules of war.
