Elsa's days in this earthly coil are numbered in 1883 Season 1, Episode 10, "This Is Not Your Heaven." Episode 10 is directed by Ben Richardson and written by Taylor Sheridan. It opens with our pioneers arriving to Fort Caspar to seek medical care for Elsa (Isabel May), Josef (Marc Rissmann), and Risa (Isabel May) (Anna Fiamora). The trio is hailed by two young men who take James (Tim McGraw), Captain Shea (Sam Elliott), and the recently fainted Elsa to the doctor, Major Hemphill, after the army abandons the Fort (Raphael Sbarge). He is unable to help Elsa, but when they leave, Shea finds that the Fort is now held by the Wyoming Stockgrowers Association, the same group whose deputies murdered the Lakota women and children and were later slain in vengeance by James, Shea, and Thomas.
