When designer John McClain starts noticing a material or feature show up too frequently in homes, he knows it’s time to try something different. So his new Los Angeles home became a laboratory of sorts to test out new design ideas and looks.

He used porcelain slabs, a relatively new product, for his countertops, backsplash and fireplace covering.
