When I first heard Hans Zimmer was writing the score for Dark Phoenix, I had mixed feelings. Zimmer is probably my favourite composer of all time, but as you can tell by my channel, I am a sucker for thematic continuity in film scores, and I know that Zimmer never reuses music from other composers if he’s doing the sequel. And I love John Ottman’s music for the previous X-Men films.


On the other hand, as I’ve said; Zimmer is probably my favourite composer, and the X-Men are my favourite comic characters (besides Spider-Man), so I was incredibly eXcited to see how he would interpret them. He did not disappoint.


A lot of Zimmer’s more popular scores in recent years haven’t featured many leitmotifs / themes, so I was thrilled when I deduced that Dark Phoenix featured 4 brand new themes from Zimmer. (The X-Men, Jean Grey / Dark Phoenix, Magneto & Vuk). His theme for the shapeshifting alien, Vuk, is featured quite heavily throughout, and has a dark-synth-y vibe to it, and is quite mesmerising at times, perfect for a manipulative and villainous alien.
