Mental health is health and a critical element in overall healthcare. Mental health conditions now account for nearly a quarter of all maternal deaths in the United States. One in eight new moms experiences postpartum depression according to the Centers for Disease Control, but there is some light on the horizon as the Food & Drug Administration recently approved the first-ever pill for postpartum depression.
Postpartum depression is a health condition that can occur up to 1 year after having a baby, but most commonly starts 1-3 weeks after childbirth. It is often characterized as strong feelings of sadness and anxiety. Moms may also experience a loss of appetite, insomnia, and difficulty bonding with their baby.
