Projects come in all shapes and sizes. Projects need project managers and teams to help plan, monitor, and achieve goals. It’s important to be able to distinguish projects from other day-to-day activities we call ‘business-as-usual’ (BAU).

In this video, we’ll give you some examples of what a project might look like and how they differ from BAU.

Project definitions may vary according to scope, budget, and size, but all have certain features in common:
• Initiation – This is the pre-planning phase. To ensure sure a project succeeds, even plans will need a little planning!
• Planning – After the project has been initiated, it’s time to figure out exactly how to make the project succeed
• Execution – This is the ‘doing’ phase. By now, everyone should know what needs to be done and what their role is.
• Monitoring – Project managers form a bridge of sorts between stakeholders and project developers. They spend their time running back and forth between the two, passing on important information and updates.
• Closure – The job of a project manager doesn’t end when the development stage of a project is over. They’ll need to sit down and pour over the details of the project, seeing what when wrong and what went right.

Naturally, project managers must have a working understanding of each phase to carry out tasks successfully. By learning what we mean by ‘project’, you can also deduce a fairly accurate idea of what is expected by project managers and project support teams in their respective roles.
