Sporting a pink hairpin, a white T-shirt, and pink shorts, a “girl” who appears to be three or four years old has become the center of attention at the ongoing 2024 Zhongguancun Forum exhibition in Beijing. This “girl,” known as Tong Tong or Little Girl in English, is an advanced virtual AI avatar rooted in artificial general intelligence, as explained by Zhu Songchun, the director of the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence, the entity behind the product’s development.

In a video showcase, Tong Tong, who has been programmed to prefer tidiness, autonomously picked up a towel to clean up spilled milk she noticed on the table. This action was the result of her autonomous decision-making based on a value guide, not a pre-set program. Zhu stated that “Unlike traditional AI, she can comprehend your words, interpret your intentions, and proactively provide assistance.” He added that Tong Tong is anticipated to be utilized in various contexts and enhance industries across six fields, including emergency, transportation, education, and healthcare sectors. With a wealth of AI innovations like Tong Tong, China’s AI industry is rapidly advancing. Data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reveals that the overall size of China’s core AI industry has hit 500 billion yuan (approximately 70.37 billion U.S. dollars), with the number of associated enterprises surpassing 4,400.

We will continue to monitor China’s advancements in AI development and its most recent applications, and provide updates.
