Discover these charming musical pieces played on the fortepiano, the forerunner of the modern piano, by Ilse von Alpenheim, the great Haydn specialist.

The middle of the 18th century was a period of upheaval, leaving behind the late Baroque musical practice that had still marked the creation of the great Johann Sebastian Bach (died 1750). The new stylistic orientation was accomplished with the generation of Bach's sons, all of whom wrote piano concertos, and with Joseph Haydn, who from the beginning had taken a great interest in the new aesthetic developments.

In spite of a certain inclination for a serious heaviness and an opulent sound, Haydn began to abandon the ideal of contrapuntal composition in his early years in search of a musical expression that saw its completion in simplicity and naturalness, but above all in the composition led by a voice above.

According to the bourgeois precepts of the Enlightenment, music had to be "simple, beautiful and touching", an ideal that led Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach to an art of the piano of extreme expressivity, brought to perfection by Haydn in the course of a long life whose creative impetus did not know a break.

The genre of the piano concerto reached its apogee in the last quarter of the 18th century, notably in the person of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart who deeply admired Haydn. With Mozart, the concerto for piano and orchestra definitively left the noble spheres of musical practice to open up to a wide audience. Haydn took this step through another musical genre, the symphony.
