This video gives an overview aimed at science students to explain a common laboratory technique for detecting genetic mutations. In this video, sickle cell disease is used as a case in point. ASO stands for 'allele-specific oligonucleotide' hybridisation. A short piece of DNA is synthesised to act like a probe that can then detect certain mutations in patient samples.

This is an open educational resource part of the 'SCOOTER Project' funded in the UK by the Jisc/HEA Open Educational Resource Programme. We aim to support the teaching of sickle cell and raise awareness of the condition.
