ABOUT THIS SONG:

"Something Missing" is the slow, soft and gentle core of James Wyatt Crosby's newest album Happy Memories (out January 26, 2024 on Wavy Sun). It alludes to themes of dreams versus reality, isolation and loneliness and a fractured relationships which are echoed throughout the album.

"There's something missing/I don't know what it is/Can't put my finger on this overwhelming emptiness" Crosby gently croons as the Chorus swells with wide-eyed guitar ostinatos, shimmering celeste layers and slowly moving rhythmic textures that help give the song its gentle forward motion. The titular lyric is intentionally vague on one hand, allowing for listeners to extrapolate their own meanings, while on the other it calls attention to a universally incomprehensible sentiment that defies definition.

As the song continues, a crestfallen guitar solo moves the listener gently into the second verse where a bittersweet relationship is alluded to and explored in greater depth. The lyric "What do I do?/I just can't picture living life without you/How are you doing won't you tell me the truth/I know it's hard to say but do you ever feel like/Something's missing" reframes the main theme of the song with a new meaning: yes there is "something missing" but through mutual empathy and understanding, love can be rekindled, the storm can be weathered and peace can be found.

To me, "Something Missing" has always felt like the little brother of an earlier song of mine called "Deep in Yr Mind". I've always tried to avoid repeating myself, but I feel like I subconsciously made "Something Missing" in a similar vein to that song, which I only started to realize towards the end of the recording process. This song has a slow pulse, and it alludes to an ineffable ache that is universally felt. But although it does suggests a deep indefinable sadness on one hand, on the other, it also suggests that solace can be found through sharing our sorrows. The silver lining is that there is always potential to rekindle what has been lost through a kind of mutual commiseration. –jwc
