The first ever ITV Evening News - that is, the day's new early main bulletin on the channel, News at Ten having just been ditched - presented by Trevor McDonald on Monday, 8th March, 1999. Top stories seem to include disbelief that Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown would dare to use a computer or two to prepare for tomorrow's budget; footage of Andy Elson and Colin Prescot crash-landing their hot air balloon; Prince Charles visiting Argentina; Yorkshire floods, and more.

This marked a major departure for ITV and ITN, and the changes in scheduling for the day's news (this went out at 6.30pm) were highly-publicised and ultimately unpopular. We also start to see the beginning of style over substance in the case of Ros Childs walking through a fairly-advanced-for-the-era virtual studio full of graphics and diagrams and stuff, not to mention the fact that a lot of the news, well, isn't. There's speculation and talk of what's going to happen, but a couple of stories with what I'd judge to have higher news values - the death of Joe DiMaggio, and Bernard Ingham being bound over - get less than David Hempleman-Adams making his way to base camp ahead of his mission to the geomagnetic North Pole (which I think proved unsuccessful).

There's a moderately interesting piece on young female smokers and a bit about GM food, but you know what's really mad? 'Monica Mania'. I know she was promoting a book she'd recently not written, but just stop and think for a moment: why? What was it that granted her such celebrity status? Was it in any way proportionate? Absolutely mad. Anyway, there are also some promos, ads, and a weather forecast to look out for so make use of the chapters if you like.

And, having edited and uploaded this, I've just noticed that some of the stuff at the start is actually from around the edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? from the previous night. Never mind. Bonus content.

Grateful thanks to @David315842 for sending me this tape.
