Not many filmmakers can have a run of 3 straight masterpieces in a row as their first three films as a director and yet...somehow, Jordan Peele has miraculously pulled off the impossible. From Get Out, to Us, and now with Nope, Peele has cemented himself as an auteur of a generation, someone who's able to create a spectacle with substance. Sure, his films are able to be consumed as pure popcorn entertainment on the surface, but peel back the layers, and you'll find some truly compelling commentary the likes of which few filmmakers are doing today. Nope is arguably his best attempt at threading the needle and balancing spectacle and substance, and it's so fitting as the story of the new Jordan Peele movie deals specifically with spectacle, exploitation, and trauma. Nope is not only a brilliant and effective thriller that should stand shoulder to shoulder with the great UFO films, it's also a film MADE to be experienced on the biggest screen possible as Peele advocates for the tangible, irreplaceable medium of film and the power of the images it captures when compared to digital.
