Bali's many genres of gamelan music push the boundaries of group virtuosity. (Youtube won't let me turn off ads until I have 3,000 hours of views, and I don't get any of the money either, sorry.) CHAPTERS:

0:00 - Introduction
2:53 - Instrument: The Gangsa
4:05 - Interlocking Patterns
7:37 - All About That Bass: Gong Cycles
9:58 - Ombak: Tuning Instruments Out of Phase
11:32 - Balinese Group Nata Swara Shredding
14:00 - Rare Angon (KOBRA) Performing on their 7-Tone Semaradana
16:25 - Credits and Thanks

Using animations to illustrate some of their complex interlocking patterns, this video focuses on the genre known as Gamelan Gong Kebyar, with excerpts from the groups Sanggar Nata Swara and Komunitas Budaya Rare Angon (KOBRA).

EDIT REGARDING THE WORD "KEMPLI":
I wrongly used the term "kempli" in this video. In a conversation with my friend I Putu Arya Deva Suryanegara, it was explained to me that KAJAR is the correct term, not KEMPLI, although kempli is prominent in Western literature. Kajar is the small muted gong providing short, regular punctuations to the beat. In contrast, kempli is a variation using a muted gong for "offbeats" only.

-------------------------------------------

Banyak jenis gamelan Bali mendorong batas-batas kemampuan musik.

Video ini menggunakan animasi supaya menjelaskan kotekan Gong Kebyar, dengan rekaman dari Sanggar Nata Swara dan Komunitas Budaya Rare Angon (KOBRA).

SUNTING TENTANG KATA "KEMPLI":

Note on terminology: Bali's musical terms are regionally diverse, and while I don't want to show favoritism toward any specific set of terms, the video already contains a lot of vocabulary for newcomers. For clarity, I deferred to the terms used in Michael Tenzer's book, Gamelan Gong Kebyar (2000), because they seem to have generally neutral application in Bali.
