The story revolves around a botany professor, Parimal Tripathi (played by Dharmendra), who plays a prank on his wife's brother-in-law, Raghavendra Sharma (played by Om Prakash), by posing as a driver. He does this to prove that knowledge of English is not a benchmark for intelligence. However, this leads to a series of comedic misunderstandings and complications.

The film is known for its witty dialogues, stellar performances, and situational comedy. It has since attained a cult status in Indian cinema and is regarded as one of the finest comedies ever made in Bollywood. The chemistry between the actors, especially Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan, is widely appreciated. The music composed by S.D. Burman also contributed to the film's popularity, with memorable songs like "Ab Ke Sajan Sawan Mein" and "Sa Re Ga Ma."
