In a near-future where the Earth is covered in yellow sand and basic crops such as wheat and okra have been wiped out by blight, mankind is no longer looking up at the stars and indulging in imaginative and inspirational endeavors as it once did, but instead is counting down the days left under the weight of sandstorms. When ex-NASA astronaut Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) discovers a series of strange gravitational field phenomena in his daughter Murphy's (Mackenzie Foy) study, he learns that ex-NASA members are still secretly working on a program to save mankind in an uncharted region. Years ago, a mysterious wormhole appeared near Saturn, and NASA took the opportunity to send several astronauts to distant galaxies in search of habitable planets. At the urging of Professor Brand (Michael Caine), Cooper reluctantly says goodbye to his daughter and, along with three other expert professors' daughters, Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway), Romilly (David Gyasi), and Doyle (Wes Bentley), board a spaceship on an expedition to the three most promising planets known.
