In regions where drought poses a relentless challenge, Mariam’s ingenuity shines brightly. Collaborating with beekeepers, she has established water cisterns and troughs, ensuring that both wildlife and bees have access to vital water sources. This initiative not only protects the hives’ honey from ants—a common issue when wildlife competes for water—but also secures a lifeline for the area’s biodiversity. Mariam’s work has transformed a point of conflict into a symbol of coexistence, with the potential for water for everyone.

I am Mariam Weston
the coordinator of the Ocelet Working Group
and I'm visiting one of our projects here in Calacorn.
We're in the community of Conwest
where we work
hand in hand with some families of beekeepers
to foster co-existance between them
and the local wildlife;
including some ocelots, margays and jaguarundis
but these breaks have also benefited tapiers,
jaguars and pumas. Behind me
is a water trough. During the dry season in this area
we experience a lot
a lot of water scarcity from the natural body sources.
So this is a water storage
that helps us collect water from the rain
during the rainy season so
we can use this water to feed both the water
troughs and the apiaries.
