Renault has officially unveiled its latest addition to the family car market, the Symbioz SUV, positioning it as a direct competitor to the likes of Nissan's Qashqai. Slotted strategically between the Captur and the Austral, the Symbioz is a testament to Renault's enduring commitment to practical, family-friendly vehicles—a lineage that traces back to the iconic Renault 16 of 1965.

The Symbioz emerges as a compelling entry in the C-Segment, measuring 4.41 meters in length, which makes it the second shortest model in Renault’s current family car lineup, only longer than the Megane. Despite its compact dimensions, the Symbioz offers a spacious interior, largely thanks to innovative design elements like the Solarbay panoramic sunroof. This feature not only enhances the sense of space but also offers variable opacity, shifting from transparent to translucent or opaque at the touch of a button, a first in its class.

From a design perspective, the Symbioz showcases several aesthetic elements developed in conjunction with the updated Captur. Both vehicles exhibit a robust rear design and a pronounced, straight bonnet adorned with sleek, thin headlights—a new visual language for Renault. The vehicle’s design was a response to a recognized gap within Renault's range, offering a larger, yet more affordable alternative to the Austral.

Under the hood, the Symbioz is equipped with a 141 bhp hybrid E-tech engine paired with a 36 kW electric motor, similar to those found in the Austral and Arkana. This setup enables the vehicle to operate predominantly in electric mode, especially in urban settings, where it can remain electric for up to 80% of the drive. The transition to the combustion engine is seamless, taking over during highway driving for direct wheel drive. With this hybrid configuration, the Symbioz aims to deliver fuel efficiency in the low sixties mpg, supplemented by an E-Save button that maintains a minimum 40% battery charge to handle steep inclines without performance loss.

Inside, the Symbioz doesn’t shy away from embracing Renault’s heritage of practical and user-friendly interiors. It features a large 10.4-inch portrait-style infotainment display that integrates the OpenR Link multimedia system with Google built-in, providing access to Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play. The layout of the cabin prioritizes functionality with a rear bench that can slide by 16cm to optimize legroom or increase boot space, which varies from 492 to 1582 liters depending on the configuration of the rear seats.

Renault offers the Symbioz in three trim levels tailored for the UK market: techno, techno esprit Alpine, and iconic esprit Alpine. The higher trims incorporate unique upholstery and design accents from Renault's performance sub-brand, Alpine, enhancing the vehicle’s appeal.

Despite the extensive features, the Symbioz is expected to be competitively priced, with estimates suggesting a starting price under £30,000. While detailed pricing and performance reviews are pending, initial impressions point to the Symbioz as a potential market disruptor, offering remarkable value for money.

Renault emphasizes that the name "Symbioz" is derived from the French word "symbiose" (symbiosis), reflecting the brand’s vision of cars designed for harmonious living. With the Symbioz, Renault not only continues its tradition of crafting vehicles suited for family life but also embraces a future where practicality meets sustainable mobility. This new model is not just a car; it’s a commitment to living better together, embodying Renault's promise of "cars for living."
