“Triggered by Truth” (“Triggered” #1) | March 3, 2024 | Dr. Troy Doucet

Dr. Troy Doucet launches our captivating new series, "Triggered," delving into the profound ways in which truth can unsettle us by challenging our deeply held beliefs and personal attachments to them.

Taking inspiration from John 10:24-41, the sermon unfolds as three impactful truths.

Point 1: When I am unwittingly tied to a lie, I will undoubtedly be triggered by the truth!

This point is vividly illustrated through the Pharisees' reaction to Jesus' declaration of unity with the Father. Though not a controversial statement in itself, it becomes dangerous as it challenges the authority of truth gatekeepers like the church and pastors. Pastor Troy underscores the profound reality that our oneness with God should be the bedrock of our identity.

Point 2: Living out your true identity will often trigger the people who can’t figure out theirs.

The second truth explores the repercussions of living out one's true identity. Grounding our sense of self in the unshakable belief that we are eternally connected to God can be unsettling for those who haven't yet experienced this grounding. Dr. Doucet skillfully illustrates the superiority of identifying with Christ over the fallacy of a "biblical identity," challenging the conventional interpretations of scripture with a thought-provoking example: "Owning slaves is biblical. Setting slaves free is biblical. Only one of these is Christ-like."

Point 3: Even at the end of our God-given mission, we need to return to the beginning as God's Beloved.

In John’s account, Jesus recognizes that the end of his mission is near. This wouldn’t change his identification as God’s beloved Son. Likewise, unfair circumstances, slanderous accusations, and the dictates of self-appointed gatekeepers can not change our status with God. Pastor reminds us that “Being Christ-like isn’t something you accept and believe. It is something you awaken to and live out.”
