I'm Kati Morton, a licensed therapist making Mental Health videos. Many people wonder whether their childhood trauma or parents caused their BPD, but the truth is that it is a complex and multifaceted condition. While specific experiences may not cause BPD, they can be risk factors that can trigger any tendencies already present in a person. Risk factors are conditions or circumstances that make someone more susceptible to developing a mental illness, but having one or more risk factors does not mean a person will develop BPD. So let's talk all about the causes & symptoms of BPD and also talk about treatment - how we treat BPD whether it be therapy or another form.

Studies have shown that genetics likely play a role in the development of BPD, as it tends to run in families. First-degree relatives of individuals with BPD have a higher risk of developing the disorder themselves, and BPD has a heritability rate of about 30 to 40%. However, genetics alone do not cause BPD, and research in this area is ongoing.
