Once we installed the interior doors inside the Project House, we added molding in every room to begin the decorative stage of building. Molding can add a luxurious touch to your new house, or to any existing house, at a very reasonable price. We’ll point out some choices available to you.

History of Molding
Moldings probably originated as structural elements in prehistoric buildings. They would support different surfaces, bind them together or separate them. They’d keep the wind and weather from blowing through cracks between walls, floors and ceilings in early structures. Today they’re essentially decorative elements with design roots in ancient Greek and Roman architecture, but they still cover the edges of drywall panels between walls, floors & ceilings. The term “molding” comes from the practice of pouring material (mud or plaster or man-made materials) into a mold to shape & place the material as it hardens.

Plaster Molding
Plaster is one of the oldest building materials known to mankind. The pyramids in Egypt have plaster made 4000 years ago that’s still hard, intact and durable. Plaster’s a mixture of a powdered natural mineral (usually gypsum – the same material in your drywall) and water. The mixture hardens as it dries, just like a cast for a broken arm. If it’s poured into a mold, it will faithfully reproduce the most intricate detail. Plaster molding is porous so it should be sealed before it’s decorated or painted.

We’ve installed large pieces of plaster crown molding (running between the walls & ceiling), pitted to look like natural stone, in the dining room and family room of our Project House. We’ve also installed plaster domes in the ceiling above the master bedroom & the dining room. These 5-foot domes weigh about 300 pounds. The same manufacturer offers 10-foot domes that can weigh from 600 to 800 pounds.
