Now that we’ve completed construction on the walls of the Project House, we’re ready to install cabinets in the kitchen and elsewhere around the house. Wood-Mode built beautiful furniture-grade cabinets for us. Michael refers to these custom cabinets as “permanent furniture”, because they’re designed and built to last the lifetime of the house. Wood-Mode builds cabinets by hand, with the same skills and attention to detail you expect from fine furniture. Just like fine furniture, custom cabinets belong all over the house- not just in the kitchen. We’ve placed Wood-Mode cabinets in the kitchen, the bathrooms, the guest rooms, the utility room and the master bedroom suite of our Project House.

The Project House features a one-of-a-kind kitchen design, so we chose Wood-Mode for their design expertise (to help us with all the odd spaces and angles) just as much as for the beauty and durability of their cabinetry. Proper preparation is essential for a functional and efficient kitchen. You want to think about the layout of your kitchen long before you build.

Basically, there are three types of cabinetry:
Stock Cabinets are built in stock sizes and purchased “off the shelf” in a Home Center.
Custom Cabinets – true custom cabinets are built on a job site for that specific location by a builder or carpenter. It’s difficult to get long-term warranties on true custom work, especially from individual carpenters or builders.
Semi-Custom Cabinets are factory-designed & made. The factory offers choices of designs and materials (Wood-Mode will also do custom work), but they’ll build to suit your needs. For instance, they’ll build to any dimensions and combinations of features you wish (wood species, stain, size, frame style, etc). Most offer long-term warranties on their work; Wood-Mode offers lifetime warranties.

You should consider three main factors if you’re looking for a one-stop custom cabinet provider – the quality of design talent available, the quality of craftsmanship, and the quality of installation service. Design considerations are easily as important as the quality of construction if you hope to get the most out of your cabinets and the rooms you’ll furnish with those cabinets. Reliable custom cabinet companies will offer guidance from professional designers to help you plan the layout and design of your kitchen.
