It is believed that those who traveled to Turkey were the first to bring the idea of wall hangings. They saw such an original solution and decided to implement it in their apartments, then other residents of the USSR followed their example. In addition, in those days the carpet was not cheap, so its presence in the apartment emphasized the high social and material status of the owner.
Wallpaper in Soviet times was a terrible shortage, as well as an expensive pleasure, therefore, by hanging a carpet on the wall, it was possible to cover a good part of the wall without covering it with wallpaper. On the other hand, if there was wallpaper in that area, but it was torn or faded, the carpet saved the situation, covering up the “inconvenient” defect.

It’s hard for me to dispute this fact, but we had wallpaper in our apartment and a carpet hung on it.

A thick expensive carpet, as a rule, hung on the wall next to which the bed stood. In addition, such a piece of furniture created additional sound insulation, thanks to which neighbors and people in the adjacent room could not hear other people’s conversations.
