Since 2016, I’ve broken up with over 40 freelance clients. I’ve done it the right way, the wrong way, and the weird way. And let me be clear: There is DEFINITELY a right way to break up with clients.

Hi [Client’s Name],

I hope this finds you well! I've got some important news to share. Over the past few months, I've been doing a lot of thinking about how to best align my work and my passions, which has led me to a big decision; I've decided to shift my focus towards [xyz], which means, with a mix of excitement and regret, I'm officially putting in my notice. This hasn’t been an easy decision, because working with you has been such an incredible time!

Our contract has a 14-day notice period, and I don’t want to leave you hanging; so please let me know what you need during this transition, and I will do my best to help. I can help you find a replacement for me and my work and make documentations and processes to hand over to the replacement as well. Our last day would officially be [14 days from today].

I want to make this transition as smooth as possible for you and am more than happy to help by referring you to a few great fellow freelancers who could be my immediate replacement — I have a few already listed out who I think would be a great fit!

Our time together has been very special to me; you are an amazing entrepreneur in every sense of the word. I am really proud of the work that we’ve done together, and really amazed by all that you do and all that you have accomplished as a business owner.

Thank you so much for all that you do and all that you give, and thank you so much for being such a big part of my work life the past [x] years.

If you’d like to chat about this more, I’d be happy to at any time. Let me know!
